Cell fate decisions: Create, maintain, destroy....
Vertebrate development starts from a single cell and results in the formation of a complex organism. An embryonic stem cell possesses the capacity to renew itself and form any cell type belonging to endoderm, mesoderm or ectoderm. But how does a cell decide to either remain itself or become anything of the other kind? This question has intrigued researchers for decades and the answer is not simple.
In our laboratory, we study various intrinsic and extrinsic pathways that govern cell fate choices and lineage commitment events. We create cells of various derm layers, attempt to maintain embryonic stem cells in their state of self-renewal and on the other hand we study how Ubiquitin Proteosome System helps in the intracellular degradation of proteins and its unconventional role in vertebrate development.
